SHORTS: A Series of Scripted Comedic Stories presents PERIOD PIECE

The Playground’s fourth installment in the series Shorts — PERIOD PIECE by Lisa Linke and Jenni Lamb — opens Tuesday, January 8 at 8pm. 

Period Piece, a one-act musical comedy directed by Sabrina Harper, explores the historical shame placed on women surrounding menstruation in a darkly hilarious way. Period Piece opens as the main character, Tammy DuPont, is given an antique sanitary napkin belt by her real-life Aunt Flo — the belt is magical and causes her to travel through time. Through her journey, she learns to love her body and her menstrual cycle. 

Tuesdays at 8pm, January 8 thru 22. $5.

The Mixer is moving to Mondays @ 10pm in 2013!

Hey there, MIXER fans! The Playground is moving THE MIXER to Mondays at 10pm in 2013! 

The MIXER is Chicago’s only long-form improv open-mic. For improvisers looking to get some long form stage time, head over to the Playground on Monday nights starting January 7 at 10pm; shows start at 10:30. You will be placed on team for the night and given a coach to provide some direction. The MIXER is a great way to get some stage time and have some serious fun.

Rhythm Method improvises for Be Fido’s Friend on Mondays in June.

Rhythm Method, a comedy ensemble that effortlessly and joyously incorporates improvised rock ‘n roll into their shows, is generously donating all proceeds from their shows in June at the Playground Theater to the nonprofit organization Be Fido’s Friend.

Over the past year and change Rhythm Method has been donating all of the money made in each show to a different charity. Since December of 2009 the team has raised nearly $10,000 (for a $5 show)   

This month’s partnering charity is Be Fido’s Friend, a Chicagoland dog shelter with the mission to end the Chicagoland canine homeless population through education, spay and neutering, and partnering of resources to improve the quality of life for dogs in need.

Rhythm Method will be performing each week in June with accompanying ensembles at the Sandbox Improv Showcase, Mondays at 8pm.
